The Texas Lawyer named Gibbs & Bruns LLP the mid-size firm winner for General Litigation in its 2014 Litigation Department of the Year awards. The awards highlight Texas trial lawyers, their respective firms, based on recent client successes.
Gibbs & Bruns was honored for its $8.5 billion settlement with Bank of America:
Scott Humphries, Gibbs & Bruns’ managing partner, said attorneys with the Houston firm had to “stand toe-to-toe” with Bank of America (BofA) to negotiate the largest private legal settlement in Wall Street’s history. The settlement is tied to the 2008 mortgage crisis that caused investors billions of dollars in losses.
Partner Kathy Patrick was praised for her work on the case by Mayer Brown New York City partner Jason Kravitt, attorney for Bank of New York Mellon:
“I think Kathy is unique,” Kravitt said. “She manages to combine being extremely aggressive and the same time extremely constructive. Kravitt also said that few lawyers could have put together the coalition of clients that Patrick did. That coalition, which included some of the largest investors in the country, made the settlement possible, he said.
