“It is a complex commercial practice on both sides of the docket,” Humphries said. The firm was founded in Houston in 1983, but it now has clients nationwide. Most of the its cases are contract disputes, securities disputes and business torts.

Terry Anderson, general counsel at Denver-based Venoco Inc., was referred to Gibbs & Bruns when the oil-and-gas company became entangled in a contract dispute with a subsidiary of Texas-based Denbury Resources Inc.  Venoco hired the firm to represent it in arbitration, and it prevailed last year with an estimated $100 million award, which Denbury has appealed. “It was certainly the best experience I’ve ever had in arbitration,” Anderson said.
